Unscented VS Fragrance-Free

Print Email

Is there a difference?

Why is it that you buy an unscented or fragrance-free cosmetic product, put it on and realize that it IS scented? You look in the ingredients and there is the word: fragrance. But on the front of the product it says unscented. They lied! Well unfortunately there is no industry standard on the definition of "unscented" or "fragrance-free". There is also no regulation by the FDA either.

This can make things rather confusing. I recently spoke to a representative of a well known natural product line. She informed me that they classify “fragrance-free” to be a product that can have a scent from essential oils. Some of these oils can be pretty potent. This, unfortunately, has created a very skeptical community of people with scent sensitivities, allergies, and multiple chemical sensitivities.

While it is difficult to create a substance which has no smell whatsoever (even water has a smell), we believe unscented means nothing added for smell. We believe fragrance-free would be no fragrance added for smell. We are always striving to keep the honesty behind unscented and fragrance-free products.
